Moving Up – Mary and Marty
My wife and I purchased our starter house five years ago and have done well with our careers the last few years. We want to upgrade our house and are wondering what we can afford. We have two kids, ages 5 and 3, and are looking for the best state to open up a 529 account. We have been waiting for the market to drop to invest our extra money, however, we keep waiting, and waiting, and now we have too much cash in our bank accounts. We are unsure if we should invest it all at once, a little at a time or keep waiting. We know nothing about investing and would enjoy having somebody we trust manage our money and keep us informed. I’m sure there are other aspects of finance we are not thinking about and we would appreciate having a professional guide the way for us.
City Urbanite – Chad
I live in NYC, take my career seriously and have a “work hard play hard” mentality. Currently I’m employed by a Fortune 500 company. I need help with investing. It is important that my advisor keeps me aware of what he is doing and appropriately articulates the types of investments he selects on my behalf. I want to put chunks of money in for my advisor to invest, but I don’t want to be questioned when or if I need to pull it out.
Technology Roamers – Trish and Terry
I work in the technology startup world and moved from San Francisco to NYC three years ago. My husband is a consultant and computer programmer, so he can work from anywhere. Now, we are contemplating a move to Austin as a great job opportunity came up for me. There will be a big salary cut, but I’ll get a lot more equity. I’m nervous that the salary is too low and it will decrease our standard of living. My husband is worried about retirement down the road because he doesn’t contribute to any type of account and I don’t get a 401K match. Although we have been very successful financially, we have little money to show for it. It seems whenever we build up savings, something comes up and takes it all away! We could definitely use help with our cashflow planning, goal setting and retirement forecasting.
